Favela (slum or shantytown) of Sao Jodo. City census figures reveal how rapidly Salvador has grown during the last decade, for the population density of the metropolitan area during this time has increased over 50%. Because of this explosive growth, largely from rural migration, city officials have been unable to provide such basic facilities as water, electricity, sewage, transportation infrastructure, and most especialIy, housing.Favela de São João. Números de recenseamento da cidade revelam quão rápido Salvador cresceu durante a última década, pois a densidade populacional da área metropolitana durante este tempo aumentou em mais de 50%. Devido a este crescimento explosivo, em grande parte por causa da migração rural, as autoridades municipais tem sido incapazes de suprir recursos básicos tais como água, eletricidade, esgoto, infraestrutura de transporte, e, principalmente, mais especificamente, moradias.
