Houses along the river, such as these in Manaus (AM), are built of wood and on stilts to avoid the regular flooding that occurs during the rainy season. The equatorial weather of this region is characterized by high temperatures and humidity and heavy rainfall. Temperatures oscillate on an average between 24 and 28 degrees Celsius during most of the year, but frequently rise higher than 30 degrees. During the months of July through August a sudden polar front affecting the southern regions of the country may cause temperatures to plunge to as low as 8 degrees for a few days, a phenomenon referred to as Summer and winter are terms sometimes used locally to refer to the rainy and dry seasons respectively.Casas ao longo do rio, tais como estas em Manaus (AM), são construídas de madeira em palafitas para enfrentar as enchentes que ocorrem durante a estação das chuvas. o clima equatorial desta região é caracterizado por altas temperaturas, umidade e pluviosidade. A temperatura oscila em média entre 24 e 28 graus celsius durante a maior parte do ano, porém é comum que ela ultrapasse a marca dos 30 graus. Durante os meses de julho e agosto uma súbita frente polar atua no sul da região, podendo reduzir a temperatura bruscamente para 8 graus por alguns dias. Este fenómeno é conhecido como friagem. Verão e inverno são termos muitas vezes usados na região para se referir às estações de seca e de chuva, respectivamente.
