Sunset over the island of Itaparica (Bahia) in Todos os Santos bay near Salvador. When the Portuguese arrived in Brazil in 1500 they had no idea about its size. Portugal, distracted by its lucrative trading activities in India, was not greatly interested in its discovery until the French challenged its hegemony in the exploitation of (brazilwood), used in textile manufacture.Pór do sol na ilha de Itaparica (Bahia), na Baía de Todos os Santos, perto de Salvador. Quando os portugueses chegaram ao Brasil em 1500, não tinham a menor idéia de seu tamanho. Portugal, agitado com as atividades lucrativas de comércio na india, não estava muito interessado na descoberta das novas terras, até que os franceses desafiaram sua hegemonia na exploração do usado na manufaturação têxtil.
