Abstract

For my professional project, I will document the historic settlement patterns of the historic Atrisco Plaza community, catalogue and analyze existing settlement patterns and community characteristics and develop practical planning and urban design strategies to assist planners, developers, policy makers, and community members in maintaining Atriscos sense of place and cultural landscape. My long-term vision for the Atrisco area is to develop and implement a community-oriented design regimen that strengthens this historical community's unique sense of place, and create opportunities for public and private investment in this long neglected 'place by the water.' Through the use of historic and contemporary images and documents, I will illustrate and analyses the transformation of the Atrisco Plaza area's settlement patterns over its long history. For my analysis, I will make use of GIS mapping, aerial imagery, photography, illustration, and diagramming of the area's physical form. Census data and other quantitative and qualitative will also be incorporated to detail the area's characteristics.
