Abstract

This PowerPoint presentation describes research conducted by Dr. Dusti Becker in Ecuador. People at Loma Alta, Ecuador, own one of the last pristine patches of cloud forest in the Colonche Hills, but the forest was likely to be cleared. When informed about the ecosystem services of fog capture by the forest, villagers made a protected area. Avian diversity, endemism, and degree of endangerment prompted making Loma Alta into an Important Bird Area. The hill forest protected area is a critical refuge for many bird species during the dry season, especially hummingbirds, including the critically endangered Esmeraldas Woodstar.
