Abstract

In English: This essay examines how medical professionals in Rio de Janeiro during the late 1830s relied on language and historical representation to further inscribe gendered, racial, and class distinctions that enabled a select group of men to make women and their personal hygiene objects of study. Medical writers combined experimental studies of race, class, and ethnicity with historical discussions of gender to form and present rhetorical differences in scientific terms. Though many of these professionals themselves as objective, they used linguistic tools to investigate and to prove or disprove their hypotheses, always drawing also from cultural myths, in this case about puberty and women's inability to come to terms with their changing bodies. In Portuguese:Este artigo examina como os profissionais da área médica no Rio de Janeiro durante o final da década de 1830 se basearam na linguagem e representaç\xe3o histórica para incluir distinç\xf5es de g\xeanero, raça e classe social, que possibilitaram a um grupo seleto masculino usar as mulheres e suas higienes pessoais como objeto de estudo. Os médicos escritores utilizaram estudos experimentais de raça, classe social e etinicidade com discuss\xf5es históricas de g\xeanero para formar e apresentar diferenças retóricas nos termos científicos. Embora muitos desses mesmos profissionais foram usados como objetivo, eles usaram ferramentas lingüísticas para investigar e confirmar ou n\xe3o suas hipóteses, sempre tomando como base mitos culturais, neste contexto, sobre a puberdade e a incapacidade feminina de lidar com suas mudanças corporais.
