3) Islands near Angra dos Reis (163 km from Rio de Janeiro). The Portuguese officially discovered Brazil in 1500 and the first expedition to enter the Guanabara Bay arrived on January 1, 1502. The Portuguese mistook the bay for a river and hence named the wide estuary Rio de Janeiro ("River of January").3) Ilhas perto de Angra dos Reis (163 km do Rio de Janeiro). Os portugueses descobriram o Brasil oficialmente em 1500, e a primeira expedição a entrar na Baía da Guanabara chegou no dia 1 de janeiro de 1502. Os portugueses confundiram a baía com um rio, e a partir de então passaram a chamar o largo estuário de Rio de Janeiro.
