46. Café (Coffee), 1935. Cândido Portinari is the most important Brazilian painter of the Thirties and Forties. Themes of labor, Brazil's natural resources, and rural poor dominate Portinari's work. Influenced by both Cubism and the heroic social themes of Mexican Muralism, Portinari received many commissions in Brazil and abroad. Among his murals are those in the Library of Congress.
