2. O desembarque da Imperatriz Leopoldina (The Arrival of Empress Leopoldina), by Jean Baptiste Debret, c. 1818. Debret, another member of the French Artistic Mission, taught at the Academy and served as history painter to the Court. The event depicted here is the arrival of the Empress Leopoldina. Debret became one of the most important artists to work in Brazil during the Nineteenth Century. ln addition to his courtly and academic duties, he traveled widely throughout Brazil, recording the customs and appearance of all races and classes, as well as the landscape and vegetation. He published his impressions of the country in a three volume portfolio entitled Voyage pittoresque et historique au Brésil (1834-39).
