Belgo-Mineira industrial complex in Sabará (MG). Minas Gerais possesses the largest reserves of iron ore in the country after Carajás, most important of which are hematite of high purity found in the so-called "iron quadrangle" in the southeast part of the state. Tons of iron ore are exported yearly through the ports of Tubarão (ES, near Vit6ria) and Rio de Janeiro. Minas Gerais also produces nearly 40% of the nation's steel. In 1897 the state capital was transferred from Ouro Preto to the small town of Curral d\'el Rei in the heart of the state, now the city of Belo Horizonte. An important industrial center, Belo Horizonte has been growing rapidly in recent years and is now the third largest city in the country with a metropolitan population of 3.1 million.0 complexo industrial da Belgo-mineira em Sabara (MG). A maior parte destas reservas, principalmente hematita de alto teor, se encontra no quadrilátero ferrífero no sudeste do estado. Toneladas de minério de ferro são exportadas anualmente através dos portos de Tubarão (ES, perto de Vitória) e do Rio de Janeiro. Minas Gerais tambêm produz aproximadamente 40% do aço nacional. Em 1897 a capital do estado foi transferida de Ouro Preto para a pequena cidade de Curral d'el-Rei, no coração do estado, hoje a cidade de Belo Horizonte. Como um importante centro industrial, Belo Horizonte tem crescido rapidamente nos últimos anos e hoje é a terceira maior cidade do país com uma população metropolitana de 3,1 milhões.
