Historically, the Northeast was the most populous and for many years a comparatively profitable region of Brazil. Today, with a little less than 29% of the total population, it is the poorest region in the country. Both animals and plants, as well as those living in the hinterland, are a hardy lot, able to adapt to the harsh environment.Mulher lavando louças em um riacho local, no leste do estado de Pernambuco, enquanto seus filhos se refrescam na água fria. Historicamente, o Nordeste era a região mais populosa do país e durante a época colonial era muito próspera. Hoje, com pouco menos de 29% do total da população é a região mais pobre do país. Tanto os animais e plantas, como as pessoas que vivem no sertão são bastante vigorosas, capazes de se adaptarem ao severo meio ambiente.
