Black couple samba dancing in Salvador (BA). Music and dance served important social and religious functions in African socities. Brazilian music and dance has been especially influenced by African instruments, rhythm, and singing patterns. Samba is the most popular form of Afro-Brazilian music and it appeared as an urban carnival dance in the early Twentieth century in Rio de Janeiro.Casal de sambistas negros em Salvador (BA). A música e a dança serviram como importantes funções social e religiosa na sociedade africana. A música brasileira tem sido bastante influenciada pelos instrumentos, rítmos e cantores africanos. O samba é a mais popular manifestação da música afrobrasileira e surgiu como uma dança urbana dançada no carnaval no início do século XX no Rio de Janeiro.
