Black couple samba dancing in Salvador (BA). Music and dance served important social and religious functions in African socities. Brazilian music and dance has been especially influenced by African instruments, rhythm, and singing patterns. Samba is the most popular form of Afro-Brazilian music and it appeared as an urban carnival dance in the early Twentieth century in Rio de Janeiro.Casal de sambistas negros em Salvador (BA).
