The National Congress building in Brasília decorated for the convention of the PMDB during the 1990 presidential campaign. When Juscelino Kubitschek became president in 1956, his motto was "fifty years of progress in five." During his term as president, Brazilian industrialization expanded greatly as new highways, steel mills, automobile factories and hydroelectric plants were built. ln addition, he built Brasília, in the Central-West state of Goiás, as a catalyst to develop the vast interior of the nation. These grand projects drained the national treasury creating a large public debt, high inflation and extensive corruption.O prédio do Congresso Nacional em Brasília, decorado para a convenção do P.M.D.B. durante a campanha presidencial de 1990. Quando Juscelino Kubitschek tornou-se presidente em 1956, seu slogan era "cinquenta anos de progresso em cinco" . Durante sua gestão como presidente, a industrialização brasileira expandiu grandemente e foram construídas novas estradas, usinas metalúrgicas, fábricas automobilísticas e hidroelétricas. Além disto, Kubitschek construiu Brasília, no Centro-Oeste, estado de Goiás, como elemento catalisador para o desenvolvimento do vasto interior da nação. Estes grandes projetos esgotaram o tesouro nacional, criando um débito público enorme, alta inflação e corrupção extensiva.
