This article describes the confrontation that occurred between indigenous K'iche Maya protesters and members of the police and armed forces that ended in the death of seven of the protesters. The protesters were contesting energy price hikes as well as unmet demands for street lighting. The article also highlights the responses of various government officials, including Interior Minister Mauricio López Bonilla and Foreign Minister Harold Caballeros, who has come under fire for his insensitive comments about the event.en_US
