Sunset over the island of Itaparica with the Santa Maria Fort, constructed to defend the city from attacks from the sea, in the foreground. During the Seventeenth century the enormous sugar profits proved irresistible to the Dutch. Salvador was bombed and briefly captured in 1624, but the Dutch succeeded in capturing Pernambuco to the north and held it until 1654.Pór do sol sobre a ilha de Itaparica, com o Forte de Santa Maria em primeiro plano, construído para defender a cidade dos ataques marítimos. Durante o século XVII, os enormes lucros do açúcar mostraram-se tentadores aos holandeses.
