Description

Ilha da Maré, one of the many islands in the Baía de Todos os Santos (Map 1). ln 1501 the navigator Amerigo Vespucci was sent to the New World to confirm Pedro Alvares Cabral's discovery of what would later become known as Brazil. He sailed along the coast of the new continent and on November 1, 1501 entered an extensive bay which he named Bahia (Baía) de Todos os Santos after the religious occasion.
