10. O importunato (The Importunate), 1898 by José Ferraz de Almeida, Jr. This painting is typical of the anecdotal geme subjects popular in the late Nineteenth century. Geme paintings depicted scenes from "everyday life" of the middle or lower classes, rather than idealized subjects of nobility or State. They tend to be sentimental or humorous, rather than seeking to inspire. Many of the best Brazilian art students received scholarships to study in Europe, where they were exposed to this kind of academic "bourgeois" realism and brought the style to Brazil when they returned.
