Description

86) The church of Carmo was built in 1758 by the diamond contractor João Fernandes to his slave mistress Chica da Silva, who dominated the social and political scene during a large part of the diamond boom years of the Eighteenth century. Chica had the bell tower placed at the back so she could sleep in the mornings.86) A Igreja do Carmo foi construída em 1758 pelo empreiteiro de diamantes João Fernandes para sua escrava amante Chica da Silva, a qual dominou a cena social e política durante largo período dos anos áureos do diamante no século XVIII. A torre com os sinos da igreja foram colocados, a pedido de Chica, no fundo da igreja, para que ela pudesse dormir pelas manhãs.
