Description

Inlet and islands in the vicinity of Angra dos Reis (RJ). In the background looms the Serra do Mar, which rises almost directly from the shore. The picturesque shoreline from Rio de Janeiro to São Paulo includes numerous bays, inlets and islands, the most prominent being the Baía de Guanabara (RJ), Ilha Grande (RJ) and Santos (SP), where the city of Rio Janeiro, the shipyards of Angra dos Reis and the port of Santos are located, respectively. Most of Brazil's exports flow through the region's ports, especially Santos and Rio de Janeiro. The topology of the Southeast is quite complex and is characterized by steep serras (mountain ridges) and numerous alluvial valleys which form the Atlantic Brazilian Highlands. With the exception of the Guiana Highlands, this is the most mountainous region in Brazil and the three most significant ranges include the Serras do Mar, da Mantiqueira and do Espinhaço.
