Abstract

The topic of this thesis is student data analytics. The ability to analyze and understand student data is of utmost importance to universities as it facilitates the tracking of student progress, along with the ability to assess the effectiveness of program improvements. The ability to process and comprehend this data in order to determine the meaning and trends behind it was the goal of this work. This involved building a service that is easy to use and understand, while at the same time flexible enough to be used in a variety of settings, including the visual analytics application described in this thesis. Using specific software frameworks (e.g., Sinatra and JavaScript) supported the ability to build this project with minimal code without sacrificing the needed functionality. The challenges faced included the accuracy of the data that was supplied and the novel analysis techniques applied to it. The student data used in this project was supplied from enterprise UNM student data systems.
