Abstract

An analysis of economic conditions in Las Cruces, New Mexico, commissioned for its MainStreet development program. The downtown MainStreet district, and local market and regional trade areas (as determined by drive time analysis) are described and displayed in maps. Selected demographic, housing, and economic data are examined. Using location quotient analysis, as well as an inventory of local pull factors based on taxable gross receipts, the authors assess the strengths and weaknesses of the local economy. Results suggest that the Las Cruces economy has many strengths, most notably its steady population growth, strong job growth in several different industries, and its function as a regional retail and service center; its major weakness is that most jobs in Las Cruces are low paying. The authors conclude the report with a discussion of the opportunities and challenges facing Las Cruces, followed by recommendations for revitalizing its downtown district.
