The contents of these files were output by the 'A4DOC' documentation application included with the Alpha 4 software package. These files describe the field definitions and rules for the principle tables underlying the Spanish dialect database.

The following abbreviations are used by Alpha 4 for field type definitions. (Each abbreviation may not be represented in the table definitions included in this project.):

C - character/text
N - numeric
D - date
L - logical
M - memo (long text)

Four of the tables include field definitions only:

GRAMMAR.TXT
LEXICON.TXT
RANGE3.TXT
RANGE5.TXT

Three of the tables include field definitions as well as validation and lookup rules for various fields. It should be noted that 'MASTER.TXT' and 'RESPONSE.TXT' are the primary tables upon which the joined table views 'SPANDIAL.SET' and 'SPANGRAM.SET' were based. As such, they are also fundamental to the work flow described by the 'SPANDIAL.APP' and 'VERIFY.APP' applications:

COUNTY.TXT
MASTER.TXT
RESPONSE.TXT

At the researchers' request and to protect the privacy of the New Mexico-Colorado Spanish Survey consultants and interviewees, the following fields have been removed from the original 'MASTER.DBF' database. Where necessary, field descriptions have been included in parenthesis.
